For more than three decades, the crew members of the interstellar cube have been in biostasis, and now, recently awakened, they're approaching Solkin Four, a star system they hope will serve as the future home of Earth's inhabitants. These travelers have left behind everything they've ever known in order to attempt life upon this new planet—a place that deep space probes have indicated may eventually sustain life, enabling the human race to survive. But before the ship reaches its destination, Jonsek, the cubemaster, is forced to deal with increasing, inexplicable violence among his crew. He must also handle disputes between his command officers while carrying out his role as judge, jury, and executioner of those crew members who deviate from regulations. Danyerra, Jonsek's prostene, has her own problem: the conflict between providing exclusive sexual services for the cubemaster and being his friend and confidant—a relationship expressly forbidden by the Founders. As the cube decelerates, the action accelerates, resulting in a climax that tests the entire population, especially the cubemaster. Jonsek must face his forbidden feelings while simultaneously holding his crew together to confront crises from without and from within. "Cubemaster" is about a man and a society, both assailed by change. This is the story of their response. |
